Health Connect is an Android service that lets health and fitness apps share data through on-device storage and per-app permissions. You control which apps can read or write each data type.
This article shows students how to:
Enable Health Connect
Connect Health Connect to the eFit Android app
Connect common activity trackers and fitness apps to Health Connect
Prevent duplicate step counts by setting data source priority
A. Requirements
Android version
Health Connect requires Android 9 (API 28) or higher and Google Play services.
Where Health Connect appears
Android 14 and higher: Health Connect is accessed through Android Settings.
Android 13 and lower: Health Connect is installed from Google Play and then opened through Settings.
B. Enable Health Connect
B1. Android 14 and higher
Open Settings.
Tap Security and privacy.
Tap Privacy controls.
Tap Health Connect.
Tip: If your menus look different, use the Settings search box and search for: Health Connect.
B2. Android 13 and lower
Install Health Connect by Android from Google Play.
Open Settings.
Tap Apps.
Tap All apps.
Tap Health Connect.
Tap Open.
C. Connect eFit to Health Connect (permissions)
You must allow eFit to read the data types it needs from Health Connect. Some apps also request permissions from inside the app.
Option 1: Set permissions in Health Connect (recommended)
Open Health Connect.
Under Permissions and data, tap App permissions.
Tap eFit.
Turn on the read permissions eFit needs (examples: Steps, Distance, Exercise sessions, Active calories, Heart rate).
If eFit writes data back to Health Connect, also turn on the needed write permissions.
Option 2: Start in eFit (if eFit shows a Health Connect setup screen)
Open eFit.
Go to Settings (or Connections / Integrations).
Tap Health Connect.
When the Health Connect permissions screen appears, tap Allow for the requested data types.
D. Connect existing trackers and fitness apps to Health Connect
Goal: Your tracker app must be allowed to write data into Health Connect, and eFit must be allowed to read that same data.
D1. Fitbit to Health Connect
Open the Fitbit app.
On the Today tab, tap the devices icon.
In Add connections, tap Set up Health Connect.
Follow the on-screen steps and select the data you want to allow.
Then confirm:
Open Health Connect, go to App permissions, select Fitbit, and verify the permissions.
D2. Garmin Connect to Health Connect
Open Garmin Connect.
Turn on sharing to Health Connect in Garmin Connect settings (Health Connect integration).
Sync your Garmin device.
Then confirm:
Open Health Connect, go to App permissions, select Garmin Connect, and verify the permissions.
Note: Garmin describes its Health Connect transfer as one-way sharing from Garmin Connect to Health Connect.
D3. Samsung Health to Health Connect
Open Samsung Health.
Go to Settings.
Tap Health Connect.
Tap App permissions.
Select Samsung Health and enable the data permissions you want.
Tip: If you granted permissions in Android Settings instead of inside Samsung Health, open Samsung Health after granting permissions.
D4. Google Fit to Health Connect
Open Google Fit.
Tap Profile.
Tap Settings.
Under Health Connect settings, tap Manage data and access.
Tap Connected apps.
Manage the connection in Health Connect.
E. Verify data flow to eFit
Open Health Connect.
Confirm eFit has the read permissions you expect (Health Connect -> App permissions -> eFit).
Confirm your tracker app has write permissions (Health Connect -> App permissions -> your tracker app).
Open eFit and refresh/sync.
If Health Connect has no activity data yet, do a fresh sync in your tracker app, then return to eFit.
F. Prevent duplicate step counts (set data sources and priority)
If more than one app writes the same data type (for example, steps), Health Connect can merge data. If values conflict, Health Connect prioritizes the app higher in the list.
Open Health Connect.
Under Permissions and data, tap Manage data.
Tap Data sources and priority.
Select a category such as Activity.
Under App sources, press and hold the app name, then drag to reorder.
Recommendation for students: Choose one primary step source (Fitbit or Garmin or Samsung Health) and place it at the top for Activity.
G. Troubleshooting
G1. eFit does not appear in Health Connect
Open eFit once, then return to Health Connect -> App permissions and look again.
G2. eFit shows 0 steps or no activity
In Health Connect, confirm eFit read permissions:
Health Connect -> App permissions -> eFit
In Health Connect, confirm your tracker app write permissions:
Health Connect -> App permissions -> Fitbit / Garmin Connect / Samsung Health / Google Fit
Force a new sync in the tracker app.
Open eFit and refresh.
G3. Steps look too high
Set Data sources and priority, and move your preferred source to the top for Activity.
G4. Remove bad or duplicate data in Health Connect
Health Connect allows you to delete stored data (all data, specific categories, specific entries, or data from a previously connected app). Deleting in Health Connect does not automatically delete copies stored inside other apps.
