Instructor Guidelines and Procedures

You are responsible for knowing and following all the guidelines below.

Attendance/Participation: This class is fully online, and we will not meet face to face.  It is up to you to complete all assignments on your own time before the deadlines. No late assignments are accepted! You are responsible for logging in each week and taking care of assignments.

Federal Legislation requires Lone Star College to verify attendance for students who receive financial aid each semester. If you are receiving financial aid, you must participate in an academically related activity in each course by Official Day of Record (ODR) of the enrolled semester.

Non-Attendance Drop (NA)
If you do not log into your course or participate in an academically related activity by the Official Day of Record (ODR), you will be dropped from your course and may lose financial eligibility for the semester. Any financial aid funds disbursed to you or your account must be returned to the U.S. Department of Education.

Academically Related Activities (FSA HB Sept.2019)
Academically related activities include, but are not limited to, physically attending a class where there is an opportunity for direct interaction between the instructor and students; initiating contact with a faculty member to ask a question about the academic subject studied in the course; participating in an online discussion about academic matters; submitting an academic assignment; taking an exam, an interactive tutorial or computer-assisted instruction; or attending a study group that is assigned by the school.
Academically related activities do NOT include activities where a student may be present, but not academically engaged, such as logging into an online class without active participation, participating in academic counseling or advisement, living in institutional housing, or participating in the school’s meal plan.
In a distance education context, logging into an online class is not sufficient by itself to demonstrate academic attendance by the student. A student must participate in class or otherwise be engaged in an academically related activity, such as but not limited to, contributing to an online discussion or contacting a faculty member to ask a course-related question via approved communication channels. Completion of an online orientation or syllabus quiz constitutes attendance.

Artificial Intelligence Policy: The use of artificial intelligence (AI) can be a valuable tool for academic purposes and is permitted in this course as a supplementary resource. AI may assist with generating ideas, checking grammar, and improving writing skills and other class-related tasks, but it should not be relied upon solely. Students are expected to demonstrate independent thinking and analysis and use AI to supplement their work. Any work submitted must be the student's own, and using AI to generate entire assignments or portions of assignments is strictly prohibited and will result in academic consequences. To promote transparency and accountability, students must document their use of AI in their assignments, including the prompts or instructions they provided to the AI and any additional notes about the AI's output or their analysis. Plagiarism, including using AI to generate assignments, not only cheats the student out of learning but is considered a form of academic misconduct and will result in disciplinary action. For more information on the appropriate use of instructional resources, please visit https://www.lonestar.edu/instructional-resources.htm.

Communication: In the age of social media, many students approach emailing similarly to texting and other forms of digital communication, where the norms are brevity and informality. Instead, emailing calls for more formality and care.

My responses via email will be answered within 24-36 hours. This does not include the weekend or holidays. Although I might check D2L or email on the weekend, it cannot be guaranteed throughout the semester. Therefore, emails sent after 5:00 pm on Friday might not be answered before the following Monday. I will post an announcement if I'm not available for an extended period.

When emailing me, please adhere to the guidelines below. Emails that do not meet the guidelines below may be returned to the student for a second attempt. I expect you to correspond with your peers respectfully and courteously.

Risk Statement: Safety at Lone Star College - Online is of the utmost importance. Please be aware this course could present potential health hazards. This course involves physical activity and, as a result, students should be aware of the risks associated. Students shall notify the instructor of any questions or concerns, if any. Students shall also follow the Chancellor’s Procedures for requesting a disability accommodation, when necessary.

The policy and procedures for requesting a disability accommodation are available at https://www.lonestar.edu/accessibility-services-resources.htm.

Student Behavior: Email and online discussions should be civilized and respectful to everyone, and relevant to the topic we are discussing. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Classroom and online discussions are meant to allow us to hear a variety of viewpoints. This can only happen if we respect each other and our differences.
The Lone Star College Catalog [Student Conduct, Section 562.01d] states, "Disruptive activity that hinders other students' learning or deters an instructor from effective teaching will not be tolerated under any circumstances."

D2L:  You will be required to use D2L.  You will need to logon every Monday to check for updates. It's recommended that you login even more often so you don't miss any announcements.

Late Work:  No late assignments will be accepted.  No excuse for late assignments even if your computer crashes or if you cannot access Wi-Fi!  Do not wait until the last hour to turn in your work.

Drop/Withdraw Procedure:  To drop this class, follow the procedure at https://vlac.lonestar.edu/help/a413

Nutrition Written Assignment
Due: 11:30 pm on Fri, Oct 14th
Value: 100 points

You will have one written assignment that you will participate in this semester. This is a 3-day nutrition diary of everything you eat and drink. You can begin working on it anytime, but you must start at least four days before the due date.

Nutrition Written Assignment Instructions

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to observe and analyze the role of daily nutrition.

Action Items:

  1. Record all food and liquid consumption for three days (72 hours). Details of everything eaten are needed. For example, 1 whole wheat pita, ¾ cup lettuce, 1 tablespoon mayo, 3 oz. sliced turkey, ½ oz. mild cheddar cheese, ¼ small tomato, and ¼ small pickle.
  2. Input all food and beverage consumption data into a nutritional tracking platform or a mobile app compatible with Android or iPhone, like Fitbit.com. While the Fitbit app or website is our top recommendation, feel free to use any preferred application. For a step-by-step guide on logging food using Fitbit, refer to the following detailed instructions: How To Log Food Using Fitbit
  3. Ensure that you can download a nutritional report that has (a) a food log and (b) the percent consumption of carbohydrates, protein, and fat.
  4. Here is an article from the Fitbit website that contains instructions on accessing your macronutrient charts using the APP. How to Track Macros in Your Fitbit App
  5. After you access your charts, take a screenshot and email it to yourself. You'll then be able to include it in your paper.
  6. Assess whether your intake of protein, carbohydrates, and fats aligns with the suggested guidelines found at this link: https://avitahealth.org/health-library/macronutrients-a-simple-guide-to-macros/
  7. Compare your results to the guidelines and describe what adjustments should be made to improve body composition.
  8. Submit a 500-word written analysis of what you learned. Your paper will follow APA guidelines.

Activity Tracker Assignment
Due: 11:30 pm on Sun, Dec 11th
Value: 100 points

Alternative Methods: Fitbit MobileTrack is free software that will track steps on your phone. An activity tracker is recommended as it also enables you to be graded on active minutes.

Details:

  1. If using a Fitbit, you can set up an account at https://fitbit.com.
  2. If you are using a non-Fitbit activity tracker, you will need to install the Google Fit app onto your phone.
  3. Register at eFit using this link - https://efit.health/register/register.php?c=429. Registering is important because your Activity Tracker and Fitness Assessment Assignments are calculated at eFit.
  4. After logging in, click Sync Tracker on the left menu and follow the steps to link your activity tracker to eFit.Health. You will only need to Sync once. This will enable your activity to be automatically tracked and auto-submitted to your grade book at the end of the semester.

Wear your activity tracker at least 5 out of 7 days/week. Obtain at least 100 Active Minutes/week OR 10,000 steps/day for maximum credit. The highest value between active minutes and steps will determine your weekly grade. If you are graded on steps, the best 5 out of 7 days for the week will be averaged.

  • If you are unsure how to use your activity tracker, please look at that manufacturers website for instructions and details.
  • You need to sync your activity tracker with your smartphone at least once a week. It is better to sync once a day. To sync your data, open the app associated with your activity tracker.
  • Log into eFit every Monday to check for announcements and to confirm that your activity data is correct.

One Mile Walk
The Rockport Walking Test is a sub-maximal field test to estimate VO2max in males and females ages 20 to 69 years. It is a simple test that involves walking one mile (1.6 kilometers) as quickly as possible. Running is not allowed. Start your stopwatch to time how long it takes to walk one mile to begin the test. At the end of the mile walk, stop the stopwatch and immediately take your heart rate for 15 seconds. Multiply that number by 4 to get your beats per minute. You will need to record how long it took to walk one mile in minutes and seconds and your pulse count. This video shows how to check your pulse if you are not familiar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHHr8qNU9QY. The count in the video is for 30 seconds, and they multiply by 2 to get beats per minute. For the fitness assessment, count your pulse for 15 seconds and multiply by 4.

Pushup Test
Males will perform regular pushups with the knees off the floor, and females will perform modified pushups with knees on the floor. Females can perform pushups with knees off the floor, but the norm charts will not show accurate results. Just be sure to be consistent between the pre and post-test.

Perform as many pushups as you can with no time limit. If you get tired, you can rest in the up position. The test is considered complete if you rest your body on the floor. Here is a video demonstration of a proper pushup: https://youtu.be/9fAPPuJoIq4

Lone Star College Policies

Students are encouraged to read the Student Handbook and LSC Catalog for a comprehensive list of college guidelines, policies, and procedures. On the Lone Star College Syllabus Policies web page, you will find the most up-to-date versions of LSC policies, procedures, and student success information.  It is your personal, academic, and legal responsibility to know and adhere to the information provided.
Prominent policies and their corresponding links are provided in the table below.

Lone Star College Policies

Policy

Description & Link

Academic Integrity & Dishonesty

Lone Star College promotes the importance of personal and academic honesty from its students, instructors, and faculty members as defined in the College's Academic Integrity and Dishonesty Policy. Detailed information for students can be found in the Academic Integrity brochure.

Student Code of Conduct

Lone Star College students are expected to follow the Student Code of Conduct. Violation of conduct policies can result in disciplinary action, up to and including suspension.

Course Withdrawal &

Six Course Drop Limit

Undergraduate students enrolling as first-time in college students at a public institution of higher education in Texas will be limited to a total of six dropped courses during their entire undergraduate career. Lone Star College uses the term "withdrawal" to refer to a dropped course. Withdrawals occur between the official day of record (ODR) and the posted withdrawal "W" day for the course. Withdrawing from a course will result in a grade of "W" on the official transcript.
Drops/withdrawals prior to the official date are not considered "dropped" courses and are not posted on the transcript. No credit will be awarded for a course earning a "W." It is the student's responsibility to withdraw prior to the course's "W" date. Lack of attendance does not constitute as a withdrawal.

Course Evaluation

Course evaluations are the students' opportunity to provide feedback about their experience in the course. The evaluation questionnaire can be accessed through "Links" under the Student menu in myLoneStar.

Academic Appeals

An academic appeal is a formal request brought by a student to change a grade or to challenge a penalty imposed for violation of standards of academic integrity. A request to change a grade or to challenge a penalty must be made within twelve months of the action. Detailed information can be found on the College's
Student Complaints page.

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. Under FERPA, records may not be released without consent of the student. Additionally, Lone Star College is permitted to release certain "directory information" without student consent. Detailed information and consent form may be found on the LSC FERPA page.

Title IX

Title IX is Federal legislation that helps protect individuals from discrimination, including but not limited to, acts of harassment and violence, based on sex in education programs or activities. Lone Star College strives to create and provide a safe and supportive learning environment for all students following the guidelines under Title IX. Detailed information can be found on the College's Title IX page.

College Safety & Security

Lone Star College is committed to providing a safe environment
in which to learn, study, and work. The LSC Police Department provides information and resources related to the College's safety and emergency procedures.

Campus Carry

Lone Star College has established rules and regulations regarding enforcement of the Texas "Campus Carry" law. LSC prohibits concealed carry in some areas of LSC campuses, known as exclusion zones. Detailed information can be found on the LSC Campus Carry page.
Exclusion Zone Notice:
Required statement for faculty whose offices are designated as exclusion zones (delete the header and statement if it does not apply to you):
As permitted by LSC regulations, I have designated my assigned faculty office in Room (number) as an exclusion zone where concealed carry is prohibited. In addition to the office hours listed elsewhere in this syllabus, I will hold office hours at (specific place) on (days) from (start time) to (end time). Students are invited to attend whichever office hour location works best for them. I may also be able to meet with students at other places and times if we can agree in advance, but I cannot guarantee that I will be able to accommodate your schedule.

Software Piracy

Law strictly prohibits unauthorized copying of software purchased by Lone Star College for use in laboratories. LSC administration will take appropriate disciplinary action against anyone violating copyright laws.

Computer Virus Protection

Computer viruses are, unfortunately, a fact of life. Using portable data storage devices (USB drive, SD card) on more than one computer creates the possibility of infecting computers and devices with a computer virus. This exposes the computers of the campus, your personal computer, and any others you may be using to potentially damaging viruses. The campus has aggressive anti-virus procedures in place to protect its computers but cannot guarantee that a virus might not temporarily infect one of its machines. It is your responsibility to protect all computers under your control and use and ensure that each storage device you use, whenever or wherever you use it, has been scanned with anti-virus software. Since new viruses arise continually, your anti-virus software must be kept current. And, since no anti-virus software will find every virus, keeping copies of data (backups) is extremely important.
